When you earn points on a travel credit card, the card issuer gives you two ways to spend them. The easy way is the bank's own travel portal, where points are typically worth around a cent each toward any flight. The powerful way is transferring points to an airline loyalty program and booking the award ticket there, where the same points can be worth far more, especially for premium cabins.

The reason is simple. Airlines price award seats in miles according to their own charts and partnerships, which often have not kept up with cash prices. A business class seat that costs thousands of dollars in cash might book for a fraction of that in miles. Transferring unlocks those prices. The portal never will.

Point transfers are a one-way street. Once your credit card points become airline miles, they cannot be moved back. This is the single most important thing to understand, because it shapes every step that follows.

Only transfer points when you have a specific flight in mind and have confirmed the award seat is actually available. Moving points because of a transfer bonus, or because you might travel someday, strands your points in a program where they are worth less and expire sooner. Find the seat first, then move exactly what the booking needs.

Log in to the airline's website and search for your route and dates using miles instead of cash. Look for saver-level availability, which is the reasonably priced award space, rather than the inflated standard rates. Flexibility with dates helps enormously, since award seats on popular routes disappear quickly.

Checking programs one by one is slow, which is where award search tools earn their keep. They scan many airlines and loyalty programs at once and tell you which program books each seat, what it costs in points, and how to book it. You always book directly with the airline operating the award.

Major bank programs each transfer to a different set of airline partners. Chase, American Express, Capital One, and Citi all have their own partner lists, and the same flight can often be booked through several of them at different prices. Before you commit, confirm that the loyalty program you want to book through is actually a transfer partner of your card program.

Align the transfer with your travel plans. Points that transfer to programs covering the alliances you fly will serve you far better than points locked into programs you never use. This is also the moment to check transfer bonuses, which are limited-time promotions that give you extra miles per point, sometimes 20 to 40 percent more.

Create your airline loyalty account first if you do not have one, because you will need the membership number for the transfer. The name on your credit card account must match the name on the loyalty account exactly, or the transfer can stall. Some programs require the accounts to be linked before your first transfer.

Check three details before you submit: the transfer ratio, the minimum, and the timing. Most programs transfer at one-to-one, but some use different ratios, and most move in increments of 1,000 points. Many transfers are instant, but some partners take a day or several days, so confirm the timing against how long your award seat will hold.

Move only the exact number of points the booking requires, then complete the reservation the moment the miles land. Award availability is dynamic, and a seat that was there this morning can be gone by evening. If the transfer will take time and the airline allows award holds, place the reservation on hold first.

Double-check the loyalty account number before confirming, because transfers cannot be reversed. One mistyped digit can send your points to the wrong account, and unwinding that mistake ranges from difficult to impossible.

The classic mistake is redeeming through the portal out of habit and leaving most of the value on the table. The second is transferring points during a bonus promotion with no trip planned, locking flexible points into a single airline. The third is forgetting about fees and expiration: some transfers into domestic airline programs carry small tax-offset fees, and airline miles in many programs expire with inactivity while bank points generally do not.

Start with one transfer for one real trip. Walk through the full process once, from finding the seat to booking it, and the mechanics will feel routine forever after. That single successful transfer is worth more than any guide, because it turns abstract advice into a skill you own.
