Moving points from a bank program to an airline or hotel partner is usually quick, but it is not always instant, and the gap matters. If you transfer points for a seat you found this morning, you want those miles in your airline account before someone else books it. Knowing how long each bank typically takes lets you plan the transfer around the booking instead of hoping the timing works out.

Transfer speed depends on the two programs involved, not just the bank you are transferring from. Some bank-to-airline links are automated and post within minutes. Others are processed in batches, reviewed manually, or passed through an intermediary system, which stretches the wait to days. The same bank can be instant to one partner and slow to another, so a single rule of thumb for a whole program does not work.

Most transfers from the major bank programs land instantly or within minutes. American Express Membership Rewards transfers are instant to most airline partners, including Air Canada, British Airways, Delta, Emirates and Virgin Atlantic, while a small number of partners can take one to five business days. Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers are also typically instant, although some partners, such as Singapore Airlines, can take a day or two. Capital One and Citi transfers follow the same pattern: instant for most partners, slower for a few.

The slow transfers are the ones that catch people out. Transfers to ANA Mileage Club are a well-known example, often taking up to three days, which is a problem because ANA does not hold award seats while you wait. Transfers to Thai Airways through some banks can take several days, and some American Express transfers, such as those to Lufthansa, can also take days rather than minutes. If your booking depends on one of these partners, treat the transfer time as part of the plan, not an afterthought.

Before you transfer anything, confirm that the exact seat you want is actually bookable in the partner program, for the right dates, cabin and number of passengers. Transfers are one-way and almost always final: once points leave your bank account, you cannot move them back. Transfer only the number of points the booking needs, and check that the name on your bank account matches the name on the loyalty account, because a mismatch is a common reason transfers stall.

Timing strategy is simple. For instant partners, search for the seat, transfer the points, and book straight away in one sitting, so the seat cannot disappear in between. For slow partners, build in a buffer of several days and do not start the transfer until you have seen the seat available; if the seat is likely to sell out before the points arrive, consider whether another partner program with instant transfers can book the same flight. Keep a note of the transfer date and the expected arrival window so you know when to start worrying.

If your points have not arrived within the expected window, first check that the transfer shows as completed in your bank account and that the loyalty account number you linked is correct. A small typing error in an account number can send points into limbo. If everything looks right, contact the bank first, since it initiated the transfer, and have the transfer confirmation details ready. Avoid transferring a second batch of points to cover the gap unless you are sure the first transfer has failed, or you may end up with more miles in the partner program than you need.

Transfer speed should influence which partner you book through, not just which one charges the fewest miles. A partner that costs slightly more miles but transfers instantly can be the better choice when award space is tight, while a slower partner is fine when you are booking well in advance. Check the expected time before every transfer, confirm the seat first, and never move points speculatively.
