Best Way to Redeem Points for Flights vs Hotels
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Best Way to Redeem Points for Flights vs Hotels
  • Overview: Flights usually beat hotels on value per point, but not always — inflated hotel rates, covered flights, and family trips can flip the maths. Learn to calculate value per point and ...

One of the most common points questions is whether to redeem for flights or hotels. The general answer is that flights usually deliver better value per point, especially in premium cabins or on long-haul routes. But “usually” hides important exceptions, and the right choice depends on the specific redemption in front of you, not on a rule of thumb.

To compare options fairly, calculate the value per point: divide the cash price of the same flight or hotel night by the number of points required. If a flight costing $600 needs 30,000 points, you are getting 2 cents per point. If a hotel night costing $200 needs 25,000 points, that is only 0.8 cents per point. This simple calculation turns vague advice into a concrete comparison for your exact trip.

Flights shine on expensive routes: long-haul international flights, peak-season travel, and business or first-class cabins, where cash prices are high but award prices are fixed or capped. Transferring points to an airline partner often unlocks even better rates than booking through your card's travel portal, because partner award charts can price a seat far below its cash cost.

Hotels win in a few specific cases. If you already have flights covered — through a separate points balance, a work trip, or a cheap cash fare — then hotel points remove the biggest remaining cost of the trip. Hotels also win when cash rates are inflated, such as during major events or festivals, while award rates stay flat. And for families, a single hotel redemption can cover several people, multiplying its value.

Many card programs let you redeem points through their travel portal at a fixed value, often with a bonus for cardholders. This is simpler than transferring to partners and works well when award availability is poor or when cash prices are low. The trade-off is a capped value per point — you will rarely beat a great partner award, but you will never get a terrible redemption either.

Compare the full cost, not just the points. Award flights can carry taxes and carrier surcharges that sometimes run into hundreds of dollars, while hotel awards may still charge resort fees. A redemption that looks cheap in points can be expensive in cash once fees are added — always check the total before committing.

Before redeeming, run the value-per-point calculation for both options, check fees, and consider which cost hurts your trip budget more. If flights give clearly better value, book them. If the values are close, choose the redemption that makes the trip possible — a free hotel night that lets you extend a trip by two days may be worth more to you than a slightly better points value on paper. Points are a tool for travel, not a score to maximize at the expense of the trip itself.

You do not have to choose one or the other for an entire trip. Many experienced travellers split their points: flights from one program, hotels from another, choosing whichever gives better value on each leg of the journey. For example, you might transfer bank points to an airline for a long-haul flight while using hotel points for the stay, because each program is strongest in a different area. This approach requires holding balances in more than one program, which is exactly why flexible bank points are so valuable — they can go wherever the value is best. Before a big trip, price out the whole itinerary both ways: all flights plus all hotels, in points and in cash, and pick the combination that minimises your total out-of-pocket cost.
