Airport lounge access used to be a simple perk: pay for a premium card, walk into almost any lounge, bring your family. In 2026 that simplicity is gone. American Express tightened Centurion guest rules in July, Capital One started charging for authorised-user lounge access in February, and a new premium card, the Bilt Palladium, entered the market. The best lounge card now depends on how you travel, who you travel with, and which airports you actually use. Here is the honest comparison.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve, at a 795 dollar annual fee, remains the strongest lounge card for travellers who bring people with them. It includes unlimited Priority Pass access plus access to the growing network of Chase Sapphire Lounges, and it still allows two guests free with the cardholder. That guest policy is now rare, and it is the main reason the Reserve tops this list for families and couples. The card also earns strong points on travel and dining, and its points transfer to Hyatt, United, and Air Canada Aeroplan, among others.

The downside is the fee, which rose sharply, and the fact that Chase Sapphire Lounges are still few in number and often crowded. If you fly mostly through airports without a Chase lounge, you are relying on Priority Pass, which is good abroad but uneven in the United States. For a solo traveller who flies twice a year, the fee is hard to justify. For a family that flies four times a year, the two free guests alone can be worth hundreds of dollars per trip.

The American Express Platinum, at 895 dollars a year, offers the widest lounge network of any consumer card: Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass, Delta Sky Clubs, Plaza Premium, and Escape Lounges. No other card opens as many doors. But the guest rules changed in July 2026: guests now cost 50 dollars each at Centurion Lounges, must be on the same flight as you, and access is limited to within five hours of departure. For a solo business traveller, the Platinum is still unbeatable. For a family, those guest fees add up fast.

The Platinum also earns 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines, which is the best flight earning rate available. Its points transfer to 17 airline partners, including ANA, Delta, and Air France-KLM. If you fly alone, often, and through airports with a Centurion Lounge, this is the card. If you travel with children or a partner, run the guest math first.

The Capital One Venture X, at 395 dollars a year, is the value pick. It includes Capital One Lounges, Priority Pass, and Plaza Premium, plus a 300 dollar annual travel credit that brings the effective fee down sharply. But since February 2026, authorised users cost 125 dollars a year each for lounge access, where it used to be free, and guest access is now limited. Capital One Lounges are excellent, but there are still only a handful of them, so most of your visits will be Priority Pass.

The Bilt Palladium launched in February 2026 at 495 dollars a year, with Priority Pass and partner lounge access plus two free guests. It is a serious new option, especially for renters, because Bilt points can be earned on rent and transfer to airlines and hotels. It is too new to judge on lounge quality alone, but its guest policy and transfer partners make it worth watching. If you already rent and want lounge access, the Palladium deserves a close look.

Start with your airports, not the card marketing. Check which lounges exist at the airports you actually use, and which networks cover them. A card with a great lounge network is useless if your home airport has none of its lounges. Next, count your guests honestly: a card that allows two free guests beats a card with a bigger network if you always travel as a family. Then check the effective fee after credits you will actually use, not credits you might use.

Consider authorised users too. Some cards give lounge access to authorised users for free or cheaply, which can be a better deal than paying guest fees every trip. And remember that lounge access is only one benefit: weigh the points earning, transfer partners, and travel credits together. The best lounge card is the one whose lounges you will actually visit, with the people you actually travel with, at a fee you can justify after the credits.
