Transferable Points Compared: Chase vs Amex vs Citi vs Capital One vs Bilt in 2026
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Transferable Points Compared: Chase vs Amex vs Citi vs Capital One vs Bilt in 2026
  • Overview: Chase, Amex, Citi, Capital One, and Bilt all offer transferable points, but each opens different doors. This 2026 comparison explains which currency wins for Hyatt, premium cabins,...

Transferable points are the most valuable currency in travel rewards, because they can be moved to many different airline and hotel programs instead of being locked to one. Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou, Capital One Miles, and Bilt Rewards all offer this flexibility, but they are far from identical, and choosing the right one depends on where you want to travel.

Chase Ultimate Rewards is the workhorse for most beginners, and the reason is Hyatt. World of Hyatt remains the most consistently valuable hotel redemption, with standard rooms at good properties offering two cents per point or more. Chase also transfers to United and Southwest, which covers a huge amount of domestic US travel, plus Air Canada Aeroplan for Star Alliance awards.

One change to note in 2026 is that Chase moved Sapphire Preferred transfers to Hyatt to a 4 to 3 ratio, so 1,000 points become 750 Hyatt points, while Sapphire Reserve transfers remain 1 to 1. That change narrows Chase's Hyatt advantage, but it does not erase it, because Hyatt's award chart is still strong.

Amex Membership Rewards shines for premium international flights. Its standout partner is ANA Mileage Club, which offers some of the best round-trip business class sweet spots to Japan and Europe, and it also transfers to Singapore KrisFlyer, Air Canada, and a wide hotel list. Amex points are harder to earn on everyday spending than Chase, but their airline partners are unmatched for long-haul premium cabins.

Citi ThankYou gained a major advantage in 2026 by adding American Airlines AAdvantage as a direct transfer partner, making Citi the only flexible currency that transfers to American. Combined with Turkish Miles and Smiles, which offers famously cheap Star Alliance awards, Citi is now a serious option for travellers who fly American or book through Turkish.

Capital One Miles is the simplest of the five. Its transfer list is broad, its portal redemption is straightforward, and its points are easy to earn with flat-rate cards. Capital One transfers to Air Canada, Turkish, and several others at 1 to 1, and it offers a useful hedge when a specific partner is missing from another program.

Bilt Rewards is the outlier, because it is earned primarily through rent payments rather than card spending. Bilt transfers to Hyatt at 1 to 1, which preserves the full Hyatt value that Chase recently trimmed, and it is the only flexible currency that transfers to Alaska Airlines' Atmos Rewards program. For renters, Bilt points are essentially free travel currency.

So which currency should you focus on? If your travel is mostly domestic US hotels and flights, Chase or Bilt will serve you best. If you dream of business class to Asia or Europe, Amex opens the most doors. If you fly American Airlines, Citi is now the obvious choice, and if you want simplicity, Capital One is hard to beat.

Most experienced travellers eventually hold two currencies, because no single program covers every sweet spot. A common pairing is Chase for Hyatt and domestic flights plus Amex for international premium awards, with Bilt added for renters who want Hyatt at full value.

One rule applies to all five: never transfer points speculatively. Confirm the award seat exists, check whether the program allows a hold, and only then move your points. Transfers are one-way, and points sitting in an airline program you no longer need are worth far less than flexible points in your bank account.

The flexible currency you choose shapes every redemption you will ever make, so choose based on your actual travel, not on a card's marketing. Pick the partners you will really use, earn in that currency, and let the sweet spots come to you.

A final practical point is to keep your points flexible for as long as possible. It is tempting to transfer points the moment you earn a bonus, but transfers are one-way, and a program that looks perfect today may devalue tomorrow or lose the partner you wanted. Hold your points with the bank until you have a specific award in mind, with confirmed availability, and only then move them. That discipline is the difference between a points balance that funds trips and one that slowly loses value.
