📌 Key Highlights & Takeaways
- World of Hyatt has replaced its 500-bonus-points-per-night new hotel offer with a double points rate, though the new deal comes with real tradeoffs.
World of Hyatt has just announced that it will stop offering 500 bonus points per night for stays at new properties, and is replacing that with a double points rate at eligible properties. Is this change a positive or negative development?
For years, World of Hyatt has offered a new hotel bonus , whereby program members staying at new properties can earn 500 bonus points per night. This “500 Reasons to Stay” offer was a nice incentive to try new properties, and based on my valuation of 1.4 cents per point , it was like earning an incremental $7 per night in rewards.
As of October 1, 2026, World of Hyatt has ended this longstanding promotion, so members will no longer earn 500 bonus points per night at these properties. However, this has been replaced by the “New Hotel Member Bonus Offer” rate , which gives World of Hyatt members the ability to earn double points on stays at new properties.
To take advantage of this, members must specifically book that rate. If booking this rate, members will earn their standard World of Hyatt base points, and will then earn double points, up to 25,000 bonus points per qualifying stay. Since most Hyatt properties offer 5x points per dollar spent, this offer is for an extra 5x points per dollar spent, which I value at an incremental 7% return.
On the surface, trading 500 bonus points per night for an extra 5x points per dollar spent at hotels seems like a good deal, at least in many situations — if you’re on a cash rate of more than $100 per night, you come out ahead, while if you’re redeeming points or are staying at a property costing under $100 per night, you don’t come out ahead.
Of course the devil is in the details here, and I was curious how competitive this special rate is to the otherwise available rates. So let me just pick a few hotels at random…
Looking at the Thompson Rome, the cheapest rate is €696, and allows cancellations up to three days before arrival, while this special double points rate is €824, and allows cancellation up to two days before arrival. Yeah, there’s no way I’d book that rate…
Picking the Hyatt House Monroe / Cranbury / South Brunswick, there are cheaper prepaid rates, but at least the special double points rate is cheaper than the standard flexible rate that’s otherwise available.
